On Thursday, the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State announced Montana is one of five states it is targeting to flip from Republican to Democrat. Secretary of State Corey Stapleton, a Republican, is not seeking reelection and instead is running for U.S. House in 2020. Two Republicans have announced they are seeking the open seat — state Senate President Scott Sales, of Bozeman, and state Rep. Forrest Mandeville, of Columbus. The only Democrat running at this point is state Sen. Bryce Bennett, of Missoula.

Montana Democrats have their first candidate for the Secretary of State's office race in 2020. Missoula State Sen. Bryce Bennett announced his bid for the office Wednesday. Bennett declared his candidacy in a YouTube video released Wednesday morning. "I've dedicated my career to ensuring all eligible Montanas can participate in open, transparent, and secure elections," Bennett said.
Republican Secretary of State Corey Stapleton is not termed out from seeking reelection, but is running for governor in 2020. "I'm running because I want every Montanan to have confidence their voice will be heard and their vote will be counted on election day," Bennett said Tuesday.
